The name of the town has its origin in the late 7th Century as "Folcanstan", in all probability referring to the "stone of Folca", a common old English name.
The Grand
Daniel Baker built the Grand 100 years ago. At the time Folkestone was one of the most fashionable coastal resorts.
Agatha Christie wrote "Murder on the Orient Express" in the Grand Hotel.
Charles Dickens used to drink at the local pub "The British Lion". A room is dedicated to his memory. During his visit to Folkestone he stayed in a lovely house at Albion Villas where he wrote the novel Little Doritt.
